Feliz dia del grito!

🇲🇽 Mexican Independence Day

📅 When is Mexican Independence Day?

Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th every year.

It commemorates the start of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain in 1810.

The Beginning

🎉 Did you know? Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16, not Cinco de Mayo 😉

On this day in 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bells in Dolores and gave El Grito — the cry that started the fight for freedom 🔔🇲🇽

Not Cinco de Mayo

❓Fun fact: Many confuse Cinco de Mayo with Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. (as a Mexican-American cultural day) than in Mexico itself!

But actually, Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla (1862) won to the French!! 🇲🇽⚔️, while Sept 16 marks the start of the war for independence from Spain.

It’s a proud moment in history — but it is not Independence Day.

– How Mexico Celebrates

🎆 Across Mexico, Independence Day is celebrated with fireworks, music, and food! (there’s a special dish for the occasion!) everywhere we see the beautiful mexican flag adorning every corner of the cities across Mexico.

In the Zócalo of CDMX (that we will visit and enjoy during our time together), the President re-enacts El Grito from the National Palace shouting:

¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Independencia!

– Fun Twist

🎨 Mexico declared independence in 1810… but didn’t achieve full independence until 1821.

Still, Sept 16 is when the country celebrates the spark of freedom!

💚🤍❤️ Raise a toast: ¡Viva México! 🥂🇲🇽
